Born in the 1960's, I grew up in the Sydney inner city suburb of Waterloo.

Back then, Waterloo was classed as a slum area. There were a lot of underprivileged people and families - though I don't think we (our family and others) never saw ourselves as such.

The vast majority of my friends lived in Housing Commission homes.

Life was really simple and Waterloo was a "blue collar" working class suburb.

When I hear people make excuses such as "I come from am underprivileged background", "it is impossible to get out of poverty" and blaming one's circumstances is just an excuse. It is never a reason for not becoming financially independent or wealthy.

I grew up in the "slums" of Sydney. For me, it was never an excuse but rather motivation to do better for myself. My family NEVER considered ourselves as "victims".

Heck, we lived in Australia, the land of opportunity! We were lucky and priveleged.

I found the link below. It describes the area I lived in at the time I was a child.

It was made in 1958 and I was born just 3 years later and lived in this neighbourhood - in fact, just one street away from Moorehead Street which is where this news reel was taken.

I watched the construction of the Housing Commission units they show in the plan as I sat in our backyard outhouse (yes, we had an outside toilet back when I was a kid)!

No matter what your circumstances, no matter where you start in life, it does NOT determine where you finish in life..... Starting out poor is an advantage, because you know where you don't want to be in the future and the only way is up!

The moment you see yourself as a victim, the game is over and your mindset has turned negative. If you see yourself as a winner, as a victor, then the game is on and it is just a matter of time before success comes.

You can become whatever you believe you can be.

Where you are born, and under what circumstances, should NOT affect who you can be come... unless you let it.
